249th      Hospital        Nine

Wins        Softball        Crown

(Taken from USARJ Challenger dated  October 5, 1966)

By Sp/5 Ron Flechtner

The 249th General Hospital from Camp Drake outlasted the 106th General of Yokohama in doubleheader action Wed- nesday, September 21 at Camp Zama to capture the 1966 US Army Japan Soft- ball Tournament crown.

The 249th, winners of recent Camp Drake company-level competition, came back from a 5-2 loss in the first game and beat the Yokohama nine 11-4 to win the tourney.

The 106th had entered the final day of the double-elimination tournament with a 4-1 won-loss record, while the 249th  reached the final undefeated in three contests. A second contest was necessary on Wednesday to determine the champion.

In the first game Wednesday, the 249th got on the scoreboard in the initial frame on Catcher, Al Prices run scoring double that smacked against the leftfield fence.

The 106th evened the score in their half of the first when shortstop Harold Reid walked, moved to second and third on a passed ball and and a wild pitch. He streaked home on third baseman, Charlie White's single.

Yokohama's 106th sent a run across in the third on White's double and two Drake miscues, and scored three in the fifth on three singles and a two-bagger

The 249th added their final tally in the seventh frame when first-baseman, Candy Carabello parked one over the right field fence.

In the final game of the day, the 249th caught the 106th without strong relief  pitching and dealt them an 11-4 setback to capture the crown.

The 249th opened the game with a pair of runs in the first on Prices's single. They sent six runs home in the third on Prices homer over the centerfield fence, two singles, and four Yokohama miscues. They added three more runs in the sixth.

106th scored  twice in the bottom of the first on two singles and another White double, and added two in the sixth on first-baseman George Stokes two bagger.

Besides dropping the 106th, Camp Drake's 249th downed the MP Company, 1st DPU, and Garrison in the six-day, eight-game tournament.

The 106th lost to Personnel Center on opening day, but came back through the loser's bracket to eliminate ASA Communications Unit from Drake, 1st DPU, and Personnel Center. They knocked out Garrison in the semi-finals.
